    Hi all...

Sorry for last nights offline spell. It seems 'again' this is a wake up call....its come the time for this forum to be forced off line. The basics of it all is that 99% of hosting companies are upgrading to the latest hosting software. This will not work for us as this forum is old, like last night when this upgrade takes place the forum will go offline. We had something similar a few months ago, so I moved the forum..it seems this was only temporary. If I were to move the site again, it would only give us limited time.

My hosting company have made us a special case and rolled us back. Though we have a deadline of November 8th (which may be subject to change). We are on a ticking clock.

Unfortunately due to the size of our forum and the modifications I made for it over the years the data cant be automatically placed in a new forum. The forum programmers wont touch it as its beyond their own support timeline. We are left in the dust. The only way is to manually copy and paste.

With the interruptions from Photobucket a few months ago deleting most of our content overnight, this has also made a lot of our content useless. 2017 has not been the best year for forums, Im guessing they are being left in the dust with social media growing.

    So what do we do?
    OPTION 1
Do I fire up a new forum 'from scratch' This is what I would like to do. Obviously we are going to lose years of work but its this or the forum vanishes entirely. Id hate to lose it all but this seems like our only option. I will need all your help with this move. Basically we have around 2 weeks to move all that we can to the new place.

I will be switching to a different type of forum software as the support from our current forum company has been awful. You will have to register again on the new forum, and it will be a blank slate. No posts, all your PMs will vanish, all your content will be gone. I'd suggest moving all your content across to the new forum first. We could then move onto everything else.

    OPTION 2
We do not really have an option 2! It took about 6 weeks to organize a move last time...time we don't have this time. As stated we only have 2 weeks at best. Im after your support for option 1 and your help as a group to get as much as we can copied across. 20 years ago Capri Power was created and its brought a great bunch of us together over the years. Id hate to see it disappear

Sorry if this is sounds a little rushed, its info I only got told about 30 mins ago. So Im rushing to get this to you all before I head off to work.

Please let me know your thoughts below... Thanks all

    Nick

Whatever you need from me, just shout Nick. Option one seems to be the best and only way, but a lot of work so you can't take it on alone. Myself and the rest of the Mods I'm sure will help out as much as needed. Just shout mate!

    Hi Nick, couple of thoughts.

Are there tools to allow the data to be exported into something we could later use to upload into the new forum? Maybe some sort of structured CSV file
I seem to recall when upgrading in the past there once was a second copy of the forum available that was a read only copy. Is that an option?

Does the new forum have any import tools to help with migrations?

Do you know how many topics and posts the forum has.

My first thoughts would be to secure the technical achieve as a lot of work has gone into that over the years.

Happy to help if I can.
    regards Reg

I'm all for Option 1. I'd hate to lose the forum completely. It's been so useful for the contacts I've made and the help I've received.

Quite prepared to lose what I've put on there and start again. If I can be of help, financially or otherwise, please let me know.

    Option 1 for me.

I agree that the technical archive and model history pages are probably the most vital to be saved, as well as the contacts if they can be.

My content hasn't got much worth saving but it would help computer numpties like me if a guide could be written by someone who knows what they are doing as to moving content etc to the new forum.

As Margaret said, if you need a whip round to help funds please say.

Nick, we spoke before and I pm'd ref a couple of other forums I'm on that quite simply "work". I've asked the mods there again about our problem and which way is best to go. Echoing above, quite happy to put my hand in my pocket to help.

Folks, we (Nick) have found a solution! This will hopefully involve no copying and pasting, and the least labour intensive solution. We are getting our own server.

There could be some downtime this evening to try and sort this all out!

May I be so bold as to suggest we all donate a bit to defray costs?

I suggest we all donate a bit to defray costs.

All except Joe, who's doing the October dry thing, why not start with the cost of a beer, one per member.

Donate, and nobody will get hurt.

Thanks everyone for the offers of help, donations and advice. Id rather not take donations as its my fault on not updating the forum in so long. Sorry for the panic. I have been chatting on the phone to the support team and I have opted to give us our own dedicated server, this will host our website only so we have complete control...and supposedly stability. For now this will keep us going, though we will be planning on moving to a new brand of forum.

For now we will get installed at our new home which will begin tonight. So you may experience some down time.
I shall keep you all updated once we are moved.

    Thanks all

    Nick

Nick, you're beyond blameability, mate. You have immunity on here, statute of limitations, lack of evidence, compound technicalities.....

Nick, lets be honest here, if you need the help of an Ex Ladies Hairdresser, Ex HGV Class 1, Ex Welder, now retired, do not hesitate in giving me a call, ready and poised to dash straight in. Finn.

My apologies to everyone for taking Nick away from the PC last night to pick up Capri parts, meaning it took longer to solve the problem [IMG]. Glad the forum will be staying, I don't do the social media mumbo-jumbo so this is my only form of 'Capri communication' and it has been a great asset in the 10+ years I've been using the forum. Definately think its worth putting some kind of link up to help fund the cost of our own server as they aren't exactly cheap!

    Nick - no blame ..
if you hadn't done what you did all these years we would not have a forum to be members of.

its the one place of stability I can drop my head into of a (late) evening, and its all the members threads and notes of worthy interest that it has attracted that make THIS the Capri forum ..
As I said elsewhere - If I can be of assistance in any way whatsoever let me know.

Just plain - Thanks - to you from me for all these years of enjoyment knowledge and jousting.

also like to thank other members who have assisted you over the years, and all the other moderators for keeping this one safe place to be

+1. You can keep FB etc. I've no intention of going near it.
