Hi, what follows might be one of the longest restorations in progress. I bought the Capri in 1993 whilst on holday in the UK, from a dealer near the Pentagon in Chatham. It was cheap and came with a handful of free pears ripening on the rear parcel shelf (still not sure why the dealer thought this was some sort of added feature). It took me all over the south and east of England, as well as a trip down to the south west. In addition it was used to collect Capri parts from various places for shipment to a friend who runs a Capri business back in Australia. Lots of trips were made to the Isle of Sheppey for mk1 parts from Mick Barber, as well as a trip or two to see Chris at Norfolk Capri Spares and Tickover at their old place.

Shortly after purchase at my brothers place in Great Yeldham, it came with 13x7 4-spoke revolution wheels and fairly grippy (for the time) Fulda 205/60 tyres.

After moving to another place, the Rolling Mill in Bassingbourne. A few wheel and tyre swaps starting to happen as I collected parts.

Final picture (I think) before driving it to Tilbury for export

Yes I remember both Chris and also Mick Barber from the really good days. The Australian Capri specialist wouldn't be John McCallum by any chance? I have sent him quite a lot of stuff over the years.

Hi Martin, yes and John is still into Capris and building engines. Not sure where Chris went and I haven’t seen Mick for years (haven’t even been back to the uk since 06). Here’s some photos of the old Norfolk Capri Spares before Chris moved to the proper garage site. This was before he got the Swaymars, one of which got stolen and burnt out. That’s Chris in the third photo.

That’s a shame. Would have been a very rare beast if it still existed.

Here’s a photo outside Mick Barber’s place on Sheppey. The dark blue Mk3 GL was mine. This photo would have been taken in 95.

I’ve got quite a few more old photos Mick gave me, I might post them up in separate thread and continue this one from when my 2.8i arrived in Australia next.

After the last photo of EBD630X above was taken I drove it to London to the export depot to be containerised. As well as EBD, the container was to contain the black 2.8i B596KCM and a partially dismantled blue S-pack shell (more on this later), as well as a multitude of mechanical parts, wheels and panels. The S-pack and most late model panels were from Bobbing Car Breakers near Sheppy, with most mk1 parts supplied by Mick Barber. Other parts as mentioned had come from Tickover and Norfolk Capri Spares, as well as private sales. There were also a couple of Sierra Cosworth heads which I had delivered from the midlands down to Kent. (One of these just reappeared yesterday when I visited Capri Spares - the Cosworth head had been installed as part of a 2.5L normally aspirated build in a rs2000 escort with twin Webers - I hadn’t seen it since 1995!)

On arrival in Brisbane many weeks later there was the usual rigmarole of customs clearance and quarantine inspection etc, followed by collecting my car from the docks. I can’t quite remember if it wouldn’t start or just wouldn’t go into gear with the engine on, but I moved it out of the warehouse on the starter motor in 1st gear.
The first job at that time in my mind was replacing the tired engine and clutch with another complete engine I had bought from a chap with a blue x-pack who lived near Aylesford. This engine had been in a nice red 2.8i and to be honest there is no way nowadays you’d separate a good engine from such a good car but those were the days...
The engine swap was completed at Capri Spares with my mk1 3000gt sitting nearby for company:

Ok, so on getting the 2.8i home I decided to start having a proper look at it with a view to getting it in the road. Although the upper bodywork looked pretty good I was to discover that the floors and a number of other areas were not. John McCallums brother Greg came around to assess the state of the car, and was able to put a Phillips head screwdriver through metal in quite a few places with surprisingly little effort. So, the strip down began:
    F15D45CF-0D39-418D-8B60-AB4095828D2A.jpeg

Last drive up and down the street with just the driver’s seat in place:
    A88DBBAC-FB4D-45B5-ACA6-0B5C7331B742.jpeg

Taking out the carpets and chipping off the Ford stick-on sound deadening revealed some disturbing holes in the floor and a spring hanger that wouldn’t have held a spring for much longer, as well as torn metal around the seat mounts . I managed to get the front wings off (with a chisel...) and discovered new horrors under the top reinforcement plates and in the headlamp bowls. So there it sat in my dads garage for years and years and years. I’d sold my mk1 3000gt thinking I could easily get the 2.8i on the road but that was not to be. I tried to back out of the sale but the buyer threatened me with legal action.
At various points I did attempt to do little bits of work on the 2.8 but it was always too overwhelming.

So, almost 10 years passed. On an ‘extra’ day at home after a bout of illness I decided to get the car moved to my place. I organised a tilt-tray and it went on the 45min or so journey home. I borrowed John McCallums engine crane and spoke to Greg again, who is a pretty experienced Capri restorer and ex body shop owner. The strip down was finally commenced and completed over just a few weekends:

After some cutting it was sent off to be sandblasted, followed by weld repairs.

Looking good, what did you use to set up your wings, I have recently acquired a 2.8i and the front end panel fit is questionable. Think both wings are genuine, they have the muck trap plate above the headlights.

I didn’t fit them myself but I recall the bonnet was refitted temporarily to line up the wings before final welding, maybe the doors too. They’re the original Ford wings off this car so obviously everything lined up properly before I took them off.

Thanks for that, my Ghia wings fit a lot better, further investigation required, I think.

Tyre fitment and wheel painting in progress with 2 done and two to go. This was after a lot of hand refurbishment to eliminate corrosion, paint lift and scuffing. Not perfect but much better than what I started with. The car came on revolution 4-spokes when I bought it but I sold these (should have kept them) and bought a set of ‘82 pepperpots off a Capri bloke in Eccles near Maidstone, on a parts buying/holiday trip to the UK. There was one original ‘81 pepperpot with an Avon turbospeed in the spare wheel well and I’ve left that one mostly unrestored.

Front strut re-furb: Back in 1993 on a trip down to Wiltshire with a freind, I had noticed a distinct rumbling from the front end at motorway speeds. On inspection when I got home I discovered I’d done rather a lot of damage to the stub axle by driving on dead wheel bearing, so much damage that I was unable to remove the hub by hand. With only basic tools I trundled the car 100 yards or so from the house down a farm track to where a small auto repair shop was operating, SJ Autos of Great Yeldham. Mr SJ (once caught giving my brother’s car ‘the welly down the Caslte Headingham straight’ during a service) sourced a replacement strut and all was apparently well. It was only many years later I discovered the strut was a Sachs off another Capri with a completely different spring thickness and height (not sure why he didn’t use the 2.8i spring - I guess it went with the Bilstein strut into a skip). The combination of extra spring length but small thickness gave the car the correct 2.8i ride height.
Back in Australia I did try and source a single Bilstien but in the end went for a pair of mk1 struts from John at Capri Spares fitted with Gaz inserts purchased from Classic and Rally spares in Ireland, as well as replica m16 calipers. I also used second hand 2.8i springs and vented discs from Capri280’s red project 2.8 (thanks!)
