    Martin from Hutton Bro's?

If so, it's Colin who used to work at Hydramotion near Chapmans in Malton.

Great to see you still have the GT4.

It would be great to see it restored. I'll bet there's only about half a dozen GT4's left in existence :sleepy:

well had another couple of hours in the garage again tonight! listening to def lep and working on the Capri!!

got a few pictures but nothing massively exciting happened!!!

just a few picture of the floor! its REALLY good makes me less worried about having to do all that work on the front panel wings etc etc! the only holes in the floor are the ones that are pictured! have had a right good look round! this is it!!! one was made by me too! bet you cant guess which one and how it happened!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! even the inner sill edges are just surface rust so a quick tickle up with the flap wheel and job done!!!!!!!!!!! :thumbup1:

Inner wings don't look too bad, shame about the screen, though 90% of them break so it's not your fault, just one of those things

Looks reasonably solid mate. Do you have a target date for completion?

If your screen was cloudy around the edges it was almost certain to break anyway, so don't feel too bad about it, just a pain but one that can be sorted out.

The GT4 is one of my favourite models. Love seeing one being restored =)

I noticed that your parcel shelf seemed to be coloured and trimmed differently, do you know if that's standard?

Beer and relaxation is well earned! Good to see someone getting stuck in and knowing what they need to do. If that were me I'd still be measuring and marking up the 'new' panels.

Good luck getting it all lined up right, you'll need some more of your patience and care with that. I'll have to pay close attention to your pics during that process :)

well after a mental beer filled weekend at Download festival last weekend i thought the old capri needed a bit more attention!

i have chopped away the rest of the old front panel and cleaned up all the points to mount the 'new' one too!

bit of panel beating and lots and lots of grinding i have final got the replacement one to fit something like its taken me the best part of the afternoon but it needs to be **** on!

the bottom edges of the headlamp bowls and a couple of places need reapiring but my mate has nicked my welder to 'fix' a escort van!!!!! :duh: so i couldnt be doing with chopping fresh metal then not welding it in so havent bothered thats for another night!

but this is my first dry run of the replacement and its very close needs a little shuffle over to the left but nothing major!

after i took this picture i got it lined up a little better and got it clamped on with the mole grips!!

looks like a small update from me today but it is quite a big step! next for the chop is the edges of the headlamp bowls!

When this resto is finished it'll surely be a unique Capri at the shows - must be rarer than the RS2600s!
    Keep up the work fellah!

Great to see a GT4 - The first one I have ever seen, even back In my youth I can't recall seeing one; nearly swapped an Orion Ghia for a Cabaret II once that was mint and on a forecourt at £495, only had 46,000 on the clock but having a tow bar fitted put me off so I bought a 'Y' reg XR3i. Anyhow that's enough waffle. Can't wait to see it, probably the coolest Capri I've seen. Love it.

My god, a GT4  even though I've never actually seen one 'in the steel' before <_< they are one of my favorite models simply because they are one of the very rarest, as I understand it, Ford only ever made approximately 500 of them, so they were a rare car even when they were new ! I have the sales brochure from 1980 (which is prized & wrapped in clear plastic, along with all my other Capri brochures) :D

There really can't be but a few of these left now :( but it's very nice to see one in the hands of an enthusiast who is restoring it  I can't wait to see it finished :D ... Are you gonna keep it Strato Silver?

I wish you the very best of luck with it, mate, especially with the Chocolate Beta Plus Fabric seats & Interior, they'll be a real headache to source <_< ... But stick with it, mate :thumbup1:

    Mike.

Back in 1989 a mate of mine had a Stratos Silver GT4 which he offered to me, but I went and bought a normal (Oyster Gold) 1.6L instead. Glad you are restoring this. Have you had the stripe kit made up yet? I spoke to DMB graphics a while back and they said about £60 all in.

They will be able to produce them defo, but:
A while back I got talking to a bloke named Dave (I think - might be worng) from there and so I emailed him lot of pics and some measurements. All was fine, but there was a question over the 'three colours' as we could only spot two and he said he could make them up in two, but would prefer to get the acurate colours. As you are doing a proper resto on it, it would be worth checking that out. Don't know if Cashy or others have more info on the 'three colours' (as per the brochures)?

Also the price quoted was £50 to £60 pounds + Vat, for a one off set, but said the price may vary depending upon the level of research they have to do into the kit.

    Hope this helps squire.

    Three colours ???

    erm
lower stipe was laquer red then a mid red only ever two colours ..
the third colour has come about due to my (fix on my GT4) if the laquer red decal gets scratched it shows a bright red under surface .......

so as a fix on the bonnet shading i cut off the laquer red to show the bright red on the bonnet fades .. thats the mystery third colour
God i did not want to post this its kinda old and brings back memories of brake disc's
but you can see the two clours the fading up the rear sides to the spoiler was all cut in laquer red strips as was the bonnet

Haven't got it to hand but saw it in a brochure somewhere. However, thats made me think - how many colours was the GT4 available in? Was it Diamond white, Stratos silver and red? - hence three colours? Problem is with so few photos of these cars around, its hard to tell.

Anyway - when was atht piccy taken - wow - nice Strada! - won't say anything about the hair .... :)

I was refering to the stripes as three colours but only from memory from a Ford brochure. Thats when I thought perhaps the three colours are the base colours for the cars ie: Silver, red and white. Problem is I have the brochures but burried in the garage in a box.

Email each the CP'er asking if they have any photos of a GT4! :)

1980 GT4's 500 made and sold at a very reasonable price this put them in the general market so anyone could get a capri gt4 for almost normal base prices .. they were driven into the ground used up and tossed in the bin ... like so many other base models . and at the time in even in 1988 when we went to shows it was 'only a gt4'!! and had no 'cred' as the 2.8 had dropped in to the affordable second hand market... funny old world ..

    Well well.
Thanks to Clockwork for bringing this back to the top again!
I'm still having an absolute mare with DVLA about the V5 for this car and they requested it to be back as a whole. More about that in the future once its all cleared up.
So its as whole as it can be again after many many years. And I've actually given it the first wash in my ownership of 16 years!
I will try keep on top of this thread a little more. So for now shes rough round the edges again....

I thought this might be of interest, here is the April 1980 edition of Ford Cars which I got earlier in the week. Presume this was the launch month of the GT4.

I see an option is to have Alloy wheels fitted for £196.52. Personally never seen a GT4 or a picture with this option so am wondering what style of wheel this was ?
There is a 1/43 model made by Minichamps that has Ghia alloys on it that are body coloured - was this correct does anyone know?

they were the correct rims as the optional extra, ive seen these cars when growing up as im old enough, last one i saw was many years back at the Weeting Steam ralley, and was owned by the a guy called Martin that run the KingsLynn Capri club that one was in white and the whole car had been rust protected from new the whole engine bay was black with the stuff but no rot in there lol i think this one was the white version

From what was included on them I'm guessing the GT4 was made to fill the same niche as the the later 1.6LS though deliberately not a mainstream model, made in smaller numbers and intentionally more individual.

Also given it had the option of Ghia wheels I wonder if it overlapped with the end of 1.6S production and was brought out to gauge the market for something permanent to fill its gap as a premium 1.6 ?

Always wanted a GT4 but really hard to find and price reflects not just the condition but the rarity. They remind me of the Escort Harrier and they now make more than a mint RS2000.Great project.

Dealing with the DVLA can be a hit or a miss. I registered my Pop from an old buff log book and they made me jump through hoops, I got fed up with the hassle and left it for a couple of years. When I called back to restart the process the woman I spoke with couldn’t have been more helpful and within a couple of weeks I had the new logbook complete with historic status. Good luck when you reapply.

Really logical, l had several dealings with the DVLA and 99.5% of the time they were brilliant, but that was in the days of going into an actual office and speaking to a real person!!! You'll get there, just ring them.
