albeit the pictures of your Essex refurb will result in me visiting the 'wee room' to "consult my conscience"...
Your pictures of your re-stuffed Ghia seats are a revelation - what no wrinkles? no baggy top surface ...

Cheers chaps, your kind words & encouragement do help to spur me on when faced with a particularly tough / fiddly bit to do.

The plan overall is going very well with operation Laser guidance :D/>/> ..... as the operation title would suggest, Francis is a constant source of help, info, enthusiasm & of course guidance ..... as you can tell he is also taken on the role of press officer :D/>/> .... i send him loads of pictures & he posts up the ones he see's as being useful to others. I would be royally fecked if it was not for Fran

The day to day twilight shift at my friends works something like, clean that, rub that down, take this home, get one of these made at work, clean it, paint it, need this part, need that part etc

Really pleased with the seats, will take more pictures when all are done, got the rear bench done, just waiting on the fronts.

Essentially, the material sections (Verona of course on the Ghia) have been unpicked, there should be a piece of foam about 1/2" thick on the back of the material but this crumbles to dust. The rest of the foam is in minty fresh condition so no worries there.
This old foam & dust is scrapped off & the fabric cleaned with upholstery cleaner, new modern foam attached & then stitched back into place but with no sagging, proper chuffed I have to say

And yes Mr Clockwork, please call me Gary :headbang::/>/>

This is looking really good. I can't believe the seat back... I just thought Ghia seats were wrinkly from factory.

    Cheers

Gotta get the damn tape residue off the black stripe.

2 coats of etch primer all over, 2 coats of black primer around the centre band, 2 coats of satin black. masked up the black & put a couple of coats of alloy wheel silver on the rest. Bloody tape residue left on the black but it will be removed :duh: :duh:

Been cleaning up the steering rack & prop this week so hopefully a little more painting over the weekend.

Next week my mates place is shut & I'm off work so tackling the monster that is the air box will be a long & slow one :sleepy:

All being well the latest primed stuff will be black this time tomorrow.
No date to be honest, I want it finished tomorrow but that ain't gonna happen :)

Pretty much all of the ancillaries are done, just cross member, starter, air box & autobox left to paint I think

Focus now is back to the body, other customers cars have taken longer than planned but next week will see me back underneath the car scraping underseal from areas to be worked on, couple of holes in the floor & rear arches spring to mind, before the fabrication chaps get to work.

Fingers crossed, things are moving ;)

Picking up the drivers seat tomorrow so that will be the full set done.

I know a few folks have kindly made complimentary comments so thought I would share the contact details here http://www.mbtrim.com/

The chaps name is Bernard, apparently web site & e-mail address is acting up a bit at the moment but the contact number works for me.

They are only a small company & you deal with the people doing the work & as you can see they have made a damn fine job of my seats.

Hope this helps someone, Cheers Flash :headbang::/>

Mega thanks to my PR man Wing co :headbang::

Well in keeping with the rest of how this has gone, the inside of the rear valance needed some love so off with the fuel tank, which in turn allows access to scraping around the new found space. I uncovered some nastyness between the chassis legs, all looked good from outside as the underseal was intact but not pretty in between so off with the axle.

As then there was no weight to it, lets get on & make up the brackets & get it on the spit. So much easier to work on the underneath, we all agreed we should have done it weeks ago.

So now the fuel tank & axle will be cleaned & painted ....... would have been the only untouched items but the motto of operation laser guidance is do it once, do it properly ......... costing me a bloody fortune that Fran bloke :D :D :D :D

Thanks folks, I didnt get to witness it myself yesterday hence why my mate took the short video for me.

Bit of a relief that all went well, seems that we may have reached a turning point but still soooooo much to do.

Main points of what we did to the engine, new oil pump & shaft, new timing gears, new rings, new cam followers & new cam shaft & the obligatory paint & tidying of the ancilliaries.

Thanks Fran for the latest pictures :headbang::/>/>

There are so many different colours under there, towards the back & spare wheel well its gloss white, fading into body colour blue, then we go thru rusty navy / black all along the tranny tunnel & then back to white, i'll take more pics this evening as I have exposed more white at the front. Underneath has been well preserved with engine / autobox oil :smokin:/>/>

Funny you should say that Jez, my mate said last night that once I had finished cleaning it all back, its all primed, stone chipped etc .... what about going for blue underneath.

I'm not sure if that would be in keeping with the standard original, whatever that was because its different colours or would look too bling ?

Would it / should it be satin black or do folks think body colour would be tasteful & accepted by the masses lol ..... what colour would the wheel wells / inside the arches be ?

    Opinions please

As you can get to it, I would definitely go body colour underneath. And body colour arches. Would have loved to have done that with mine. I'm not sure how they left the factory, I vaguley recall reading an article that they did leave body coloured - this was about a 3000 odd miler Signal Amber 3.0s owned by a guy called Simon Williams if I'm correct. I will try to find the article and re-read it. But, to close, deffo body coloured all day long. Nice one, Jez

Body colour on visible areas ... as for the rest its a mix of original underseal (off white cream) and body colour .
Example being the inside edges of front wings and inner panels all under seal but the bit behind the wheel and footwell body colour .
basically what you can see looking at the car as a customer was body colour .
now for the sake of preservation the more paint = more protection !

Looking superb! looks like a really solid car you have there and the standard of the restored parts means this is shaping up to be a stunner! Glad the ghias are getting some love. Any 3.0 capri is special in my book! :thumbup1:

and yes after stone chip underneath, body colour would get my vote. It won't look too bling, as you'll hardly see it, but when people do look underneath, it has the wow factor. People will also appreciate that the car has been fully stripped to get to that point, so every reason to do it in my view!

Nearly done prepping the underneath now, working my way towards the engine bay slowly.

Got distracted last few days with blasting drums, back plates, spring plates, diff cover & the rear axle all blasted & then painted yesterday. Forgot to take bloody photo's ggggrrrrr.

Also now cleaning up the fuel tank, get washed then started degreasing the waxoil off it. Needs a couple of its edges squeezing back together. Looks like it was galvanised or similar when new, its in generally good nick though.

Question now is what colour to paint it, must be silver surely ??? Opinions always welcome :headbang::/>

The Process of Cleaning and inspecting for Grot has been a long and involved process
After many Scrapings and cleanings the underside has been exposed to reveal the extent of the rot .

Flash has hit a major problem he cannot find any!

So in a bid to find some thing that does need work he has embarked on creating bomb proof bump stop mounts !
All new stainless base plates to the original dimensions all we need now is the mega blob of tiger seal to stick the rubber back to the plate .

Blimey, the underside is so clean. Must have been a nice feeling to discover the shell is in such good shape. The underside will look stunning body coloured with the petrol tank silver and black straps. I haven't quite finished the underside of mine yet but def will do it body coloured too. More pics of all the cleaned and Refurbed parts please !

Hiya Jez, just trying to "do it once, do it properly", not aiming for awards, just want to enjoy it, hopefully for many moons to come.

As for a finish date, how long is a piece of string, I'll just keep plodding on under instruction of course :D ..... maybe end of September, who knows,

Hopefully my PR man will be along later with photo's. Had a load more stuff plated, particularly please with the fuel filler neck but need opinions on the back axle.

Trying to build up the axle so there's less parts lying around, all new brake internals but the question is about the diff bolts. Had them plated with a gold finish as per everything else but against a shiny black background of the diff cover, not sure if its a bit much.

Probably reserve judgement till all the other bits, bobs & fittings in place. Just need PR man for photo's now :headbang::

Some very good work going on, what garage do you work at, I have a soft spot for anything Jensen, have owned a 541 deluxe for too many years, purchased when I was 23, oh dear, that is a long time ago !!! still prefer Capris though, as it was my first proper "Fast" Ford.

Ithe company is kestrel classics, it's my friends business, he took it over about 2 years ago but I have known him since I was 16, sadly 30+ summers ago !!!

I don't work there except after work, Saturday's & currently holidays on my car but help out as a pair of hands if needed

Currently got 3 interceptors & 2 cv8's in, have seen a couple of 541's come in for servicing / mechanical repairs

Yeh that was where I was going with stainless if the originals didn't clean up so well but thought I'd give them a go ..... will see how it all comes together first.

It will get dirty, I will try & keep on top of it but "Biscuit" was built for driving, she aint no trailor queen, whats the point of a lovely V6 & not using it. After all this though, I will keep her tucked up when the salt goes down on the roads.

Many thanks as always to my partner in crime Wing Co Ellingworth, for continued guidance & being my PR man. his is operation Laser guidance after all :headbang::/> :headbang::/> :headbang::/>

Even without the word "crime", that describes a conspiracy - With it, premeditation is proven. You keep at it, there will be a huge debt to society. You should have thought of that before you let things get so shiny. Look at you now, even if you act normal, they'll still notice.

Really not going for bling, thats not me at all, just giving it the best chance at lasting a while. The paint we are using on these parts (engine the same) is a 2 pack epoxy aircraft paint so basically is impervious to all nasty fluids, once its on & cured its supposed to only be removed by abrading it, thats the plan anyway.

Got the shocks, steering link doings & brake booster thingy ma-bob to get painted this weekend, next week should be, autobox, tank & something else no doubt but that will all be silver in the same paint.

Will be black honest guv :D

Having cleaned back to bare metal all of the solid brake pipes, all were pitted a bit much, so, bought a roll of cupro nickel pipe, made up new pipes all round. Fully intended to paint them green, however, the plating place has a process to make them green, alledgedly close to the Ford green.
In the interests of others, am heading in that direction & will report back <_<

That was the same thought I had when I did mine, but it didn't come out near as well as yours. Now after 30,000 miles of daily use, the engine bay looks like I never tried. I do think your extra care will do better over time. :thumbup1:

Thanks for the kind words folks, with the last few items to paint, things on the body have come to a bit of a halt due to my mates place being busy with Jensens.

The plan I believe is to get all the bare metal underneath & in the engine bay in etch primer, then prep & flat the outside paintwork & send it off to paint, I think when it comes back its going back on the spit to stone chip & paint the underneath ..... I think anyway.

Just wish I could wave a magic wand so I can drive the bloody thing :smokin:

All being well, the brake pipes should be back Wednesday so will be interesting to see what they look like, photos will be taken & my PR man, the Wing Co will no doubt do the honours.

Many thanks as always Wing co for posting the oics.

Light was a bit funny in the workshop so makes the paint colour look a bit wierd, better in the flesh trust me :smokin:/>/>/>

Trying to get everything painted ready for the re-build stage, think its just the bumpers to prep & paint, along with the wheels that were blasted what seems like a lifetime ago. Probably gonna flat back the radiator panel as its a bit orange peeley but now we have more experience with this aircraft paint we can get a smoother finish.

As for the bodywork, underneath all prepped, filler work well on the way to being finished. When thats done & the stripes / decals are heat gunned off it will be time to etch prime the underneath & engine bay before wet flatting the main paintwork & off to the paint shop.

Sounds easy peasey as Jez would say :headbang::/>/>/>

I'm pleased with the green bits, when the new pipes were made, we thought it best to put the end fittings on to keep them in place so we didnt end up with them moving around leaving bare pipe exposed after they were plated / dipped.

Forgot to add that when the autobox is back on the car, we will take the sump pan off it & it will be painted black, looks nice in my head anyway, think it should work in practice :thumbup1:/>

The rest of the lower body side all around the car has been flatted and taken back to find any issues .
I will let the photos do the talking , has been said previously but worth saying again the shell appears to be in fantastic condition .

    one observation I would make
the door striker plates would be better off when painting the inner panels

    Cheers Fran

Yep, doors only came off today, small amount of rust behind the membrane inside but bottom edges are A1, bit of wax oil around all drain holes has done a superb job

Striker plates will be removed ;)

To pin stripe or not to pin stripe (coachline), that is the question.

There was some debate between the operational director & myself. Biscuit has a light blue double line down both sides & across the boot but is it genuine, initial thoughts were conflicting. Biscuit was born in February 81 & first registered in March 81 so a quick look in my January ford brochure shows no stripes ..... bugger.

Something made me look at the February & March issues that I have & behold, its listed in the brochure both of these months. This set the hare running at Ellingworth HQ checking microfiches & to our joint surprise, the pin strip decal is listed as 2mm - 3mm gap - 2mm for UK models but only between February & August 1981 for the Ghia models, Wing Co's info even gives the colours available :headbang::/>/>

Bit of late night surfing highlighted some possibilities & shopping around today will hopefully source some.

Flash this 1981 period keeps pulling out quirky surprises .
February to the launch of the 2.8 looks like ford were using every trick in the book to keep the range interesting and boost declining sales

Light blue pinstripes have been located the only remaining stock in Europe not a full set but enough to use to find a close match from a targeted supplier in this country we have located ..
Operation Spike has be initiated ... as the European ford dealer will not sell direct to the UK . So we have called in a favour from my brother who still has connections in Luxembourg having lived there since 1977

I'm loving this post. More because of the originality being sought after. Mine had a coach line, but wasn't standard so I left it off after painting. Hope you get a real good match for your lines Gary and having Wing Co as the oracle must be so helpful. I don't suppose you will be going as far as cladding Biscuit with 4 new Goodyears when she's done ? At least I think they were Goodyears when they left the factory ? Wouldn't mind knowing for my own sake........

Thanks for the comments folks, it helps keep the motivation going.

    Operation Spike

Been fortunate to find a very helpful contact at a Ford parts place to confirm part numbers even when not able to supply parts.
Combine that with Wing Co & my long time mate & his business, Biscuit couldn't be in better hands

As for tyres, not given them a thought, got new nankangs on at the moment so will stick with them, after all the car was built for driving & that's what I will do with it ........ Eventually

Is Operation Spike going to be a success you think ? I was just thinking that Dave at DMB Graphics may be able to make you a set or if you PM me the FINIS number I will have a search for you too !

Not heard a sit rep on operation Spike but I'm sure the Wing Co has it in hand.

As for the details Jez, I have PM'd you size, colour & part number. If we dont have enough to do the car then we will use this as the basis to get some made so may well need your assistance, will let you know mate thank you :headbang::/>/>

Spent last week wet flatting the 5 wheels & got them as smooth as a babies bum, or so I thought, 2 base coats of Stratos silver & 3 lacquer over the weekend & the results were really good, proper chuffed ....... however, this lovely paint did show up a couple of area's of pitting on 2 of the wheels that I thought would be covered by the paint but all it did was smack you in the face aaagggghhhhh !!!!

Following the project mantra of do it once do it properly, last night I set about re-flatting those areas, applying a little stopper & flatting back, now I have to re-prep the whole surface again on these 2 wheels.

Will take some photo's later which I'm sure my PR man will post up.

Stupid wheels, stupid paint, stupid flatting ...... stupid me :headbang::/>/>

Nice work Gary - if it makes you feel better I don't know how many things I rubbed back, prepped and painted then it reacted. Front bumper did it for example just in one place about over 2 inches..... No idea why, just again and again. I think paints react a lot easier to things these days unfortunately. Look forward to seeing the pictures.
