Just had a pattern part masterclass from a very skilled panel beater. The pattern wings I got from Martin do fit when you know what you are doing, as was very well demonstrated to me. I assumed so many things, but when you get a professional on hand its amazing to see them working. I will never be a panel beater, but I will never be a Brain Surgeon as well. Very much each to their own. But if you want an Ex Ladies Hairdresser, HGV Class One lorry driver or welder, I am your man. Paul.

Skilled beaters are a dyeing breed same as the leading process i was taught leading many years ago by an old boy (i was in my mid teens) its something thats not taught in college these days, and can be learnt by knowing the correct people, respect to the trades that are dyeing out because of all the modern tech

To be honest nobody is really interested in the old skills anymore. Todays kids would rather be stuck in front of a computer screen or dreaming of becoming the next "reality" star.
I don't see many relishing the idea of getting their hands dirty or freezing their arses off in a draughty old workshop at this time of year.
Or is that just me getting old and cynical?

Bloody hell Martin, sounds pretty grim. There are still a few coming through the ranks but as you suggested, seems they are more interested in fault codes than carbs. Just as well because I don't know my obd port from my elbow.

I was a contract quality control person for quite a while, here there and everywhere. Dagenham, Opel in Germany. All over the place. Got a call to go to Aston Martin for an audit on their stores and logistics systems. Basically I just wondered around all day randomly checking things as fit for purpose. Went into one of the shops and it was empty, a rack designed to hold flat aluminium sheets was bare, lots of strange looking floor mounted dollys, English wheel, formers and benders. 2 lads in the corner chatting, introduced myself and asked what was going on, nothing! When Ford took over as the skilled men retired they did not replace them. Sest Lavvie as the French say. Paul.
