After two years of being parked up ive been doing bits and pieces to Penny to get her back on the road, Well ive had her for a run around the block to day first time in two years, couple of issues slight blow on one exhaust joint, brake warning light stays on,(know what it is though) speedo is very bouncy (need to check cable routing)
But this would not have happened with out the help from people on this forum
Huge big up to you all, cant name you all, as there was so much help from alot of people , but will say a special thanks to our man of electrics, AL, with out you id be pulling hair out (mind you the length it is that may not have been a bad thing) and also Martin@caprigear with out your parts it would have been a search and a half mate (but you were on the case for me), jack for the gas struts that have now stopped me getting put to sleep in the boot (and thanks for the wait on the money mate top man), as said there has been so much help from so many on here, so cant name you all sorry, but please take my thanks also the same

This is what i love about this forum everone pulls together many thanks to you all

the paint looks to be coming back, do you have an electric mop? some cheap tools are well worth the money especially when it comes to cutting!

I have a veriable speed mop I'm cutting back with G3 at the moment but it drys out quick because of the heat even with a wet mop and water spray bottle so it's being done but at a time

Try some G10, more liquidy, and it's good on dark colours, but if you are doing it in the sun, it's a problem no matter what you use.

Polishing a car that has dull paint is a bit like not cleaning the shower a long time, It really shows how good it can look with a bit of elbow grease!
Looking even better every day. Are you planning to have it ready before the winter sets in?

Buggers, and just when you've been lavishing all the attention on her - But it happens, and despite that, it stays a Capri even while putting such problems in the past. Alan should be close behind me here...While you wait, wash her mouth out with soap.

check the main earth strap first Rog ..
then run down the fuses, clean all points & troughs on that, and re-tension the blades
Hazards run off fuse 1.., brakes and indicators of 6/7 - ignition controlled.. um did the fan motor work? - thats fuse5, but same ignition feed as 6/7
tail-lamps on same fuse as front sidelamp same side - fuses 3-4, should work without the ignition... as does fuse2, accessory lights, numberplates, rearguard fogs ..

    Ign Switch Wires.JPG

If fuse 7 has failed, dirty or blown, your alternator would not have been charging..
so could explain why it wouldnt re-start in the morning ..

Damp & Durty.. Capri electrics worst nightmare/combination..

3ltr Essex is near a straight swap.. lovely engine if in good nick ..
what V8, and what fitting kit you getting with it ..
a tidy Alu V8 can be a very straight swap. and will not necessarily mean any front suspension upgrades depending ...

The 8 pot would be the RV8 as ive done this before a couple of times but this one will go slush box not manual, as you well know the wieght side is just a tad more than the pinto and lighter than the essex will not be going 2.8 V6thats for sure as all on here know i have a dislike for this engine in a big way, the Essex engine is about 10 miles away but the RV8 ive been offered is a lot further, so looking more local for it and hope its got a box on it as well, will be carbs, so that will cut a lot of wiring jobs down, i know you know this conversion as well Al as your own Rumbly had one, some parts i can get knocked up in the machine shop at Lotus as i work there

Little up date as to what is going on with Penny at present
as stated in a different thread ive got a central locking set up for her, that i want to fit to a different set of doors, older style so i can lose the locks out of the panel and have them in the drivers handle only, also have just ripped the boot cable pull system from a MK2 MR2 so will be sussing out a way to fit this in, also i have acquired two new, pattern part, front wings, so will be moving the D A B aerial to the roof and working on fitting a different type of side repeater on the wing in a different location, do this before on NOO NOO and also Al, CO, did the same thing, they look so much better than the original placing of them, so watch this space

before I had real bumpers.. on D66..
    050421_ab D66 sidemarker noted .JPG

I reckon it works better because the repeater is more in line with 'opposing' drivers eye-line, when driving side by side..
and when at a junction, its up at the sharp end, so folk on the main run see the lamp, way before they see the side of the car !!
    wee trick Rog ...
use proper bulbs, 5W for instance.. 2 wires onto the back (mine are Hella items).. 1 wire for the indicator connexion, other wire to the sidelamp live ...

yeah .. got that, when I was prepping Rumbly in 2005, so taking my D66 view, but then having to deal with proper solid bumpers, I did this ...

check the small wire on the battery..
check the body-plug where the heavy Red passes into the cabin..

fuses are not involved in the battery power to the ignition switch, only accessories..
check that the firewall body plug hasn't separated..
but also check that the fuse-link (small wire) is still intact & solid onto the battery positive..

You'll find the problem, at least electric problems on these are supported by an expert, CO, sometimes I find the best thing is to walk away and have some alcohol, I'll keep you posted on my 2.8i, which 100% is going to be fun to get running.

Alan has never suggested this, but he's stuck in his ways. Have you tried standing and staring at it, while chanting, "It's got to be something simple"?

I know this may be an obvious thing to ask, but have you tried a different battery? Could either be that its lost it's 'go' or that it was faulty from new?

Is it properly dead even with dash lights etc, or just not cranking? I know with mine that it just decided to stop cranking, turned out someone had used a crimped on spade terminal to connect the solenoid wire and it had corrded (surprise surprise!) cleaned it up and now good as new, just need to get power to the garage to solder it all together properly!

check the wiring layout between the loom connector and the relay ..
    31 - Brown - chassis earth
    49 - Black (Black/Red) - power feed in (Ign2 12V+ve)
    49a - Black/Green/White - feed to indicator stalk..
Also check that there is no issue with the hazard lamp switch.. it controls the power feeds between the ignition and direct battery for the full indicator circuit ..

check very carefully the position of the pins, and their associated numbers..
lots of flasher units have different pins and functions for different controls.. ...
theres a wadge of flasher units are designed to operate over 2 wires with the 3rd being the output to the 'tell-tale'.. Ford, and Capri in particular does not work that way.. !!
check the connector block, and the 3 wires in it, then check your flasher unit, and the labelling against each pin ..
you should see something like ...

the relay is the correct one and after calling her all the names under the sun smacking head (Lost count how many times) on steering wheel Gail asked if she could have a look and she found the issue straight away, it seems i have a leak and the relay has filled with water, so next job locate said leak on body and call it all the names under sun and hit head a few more times and plug up said hole, oh the joys

Mean while Back at the Bat cave i started to sort a few other bits, day lighters were first on list now these are a thine strip of LED lights but wasnt sure where to mount them so for now i ve mounted them under the front light bezel looks ok ish but not fitted in permanent as yet wanted to way out a few options, 20210423_154529.jpg 20210423_154545.jpg also fitted the new grill ive converted to have no Ford badge, fitted a DAB radio with blue tooth and other bits and bobbs to play with, got the amps up and running as well bit at a time and this time next year i`ll be a millionaire
so the main job for me now will be to hunt and destroy the leak, and get some vinegar and brown paper

Now that you mention it, that's one thing I've never seen in Alan's diagrams - water.
Probably that dry climate where he lives..

All plugs through the bulk head are now in firm new relay is now in hand and about to be plugged in (Again), whilst in at it im running a new power lead through for the Amps and i was not happy with the old one so whilst im doing that im rerouting the other leads as well so they are right out of the way, also going to mount the cb radio somewhere!!!!, where is a good question, i have also got a Bremi 100 to add in to the equation and need to mount this somewhere as well so it will be out with the centre consul again, and i now have a solar phone charger and will find somewhere to run the lead out of sight so i can plug the phone in to charge, little jobs take so fecking long

    reet Dopey !!
there is an article - http://www.capripower.co.uk/forum/index.php?threads/fire-warning-2-8-injection-relays.35244/ - pinned at the top

there it describes in great detail how the relays on that rail are all fitted upside down in the factory ...
    think relay, think wires ..
relay mounted as per Ford -- wires on top relay below.. the base of a relay carries all the bits and the can generally clips on, not sealed - think coffee mug
as it should be done - relay attached to the mounting rail -- wires under, relay on top ... the can is now completely covering the spades and the unsealed base - think UMBRELLA!!

so thats why you never see water in my drawings.. even if I give information to stop water getting in !

and very well done Gail.. great detective work

Had rear light issues for a week but now all sorted changed rear light fittings and we have life again so Penny is back on the road again, and as the weather had the sun showing i thought well be a shame to waste it, so my wife (Gail) and i decided to go to the coast about 40 miles away, and pulled in to the sea front road as i was heaving had to drive slow and such a great feeling as people were stopping and staring at her such a happy man again

I like the tints, had them on the front of one of my cars and the wife's Nana got in and trod on them wtf, did the rears with the spray tint, several coats and they looked great, pity no fu**er could see my brake lights, oh I painted it tasman blue and it did look imho pretty smart.
On a 2.0S I had I got some perforated mesh off the front of a digger, bent it to cover the headlights and made some tabs and screwed them to the slam panel, reduced vision by about 60%, but our party trick as young lads was on leaving the pub after a few beers was to drive all the way home at silly speeds without using headlights and roundabouts were taken the wrong way round, it is a miracle none of us were killed!!

can not take credit for the interior as this was done when i bought her, and was one of the reasons i did, Ghia seats are over looked alot as its always Recaros or the leather from the 280 people want, but like you Al i love the Ghia seats and even my good wife Gail says they are the most comfy seats she has sat in and drove in 20210523_142545.jpg 20210523_142637.jpg

up date to whats going on with Penny, im now sorting the bonnet out as the blow over was just to clean her up for a show at Arminghall so at the moment ive gone one an flattened the bonnet and tops of the wings, i have gone over the areas and used a stopper on all the pin holes and left it to go off for at least 24 hrs to allow for shrinkage, will add pics later, i do have a show tomorrow but will see how things go today
