M135i xdrive and soon to be 2.8i Capri!
Hi all, long time lurker here.
Been on the look out for a tidy 2.8i for around 2 years now, but not found anything thats within a days travel! I live North of Aberdeen.

Anyway, this has caught my eye. Trouble is I cant get a good look at it until lockdown gets lifted!
Its up at £14k with 61000 miles on it.
Im dying to get to it but cant risk it.

Its South of Glasgow- anyone know anything about the car? Any thoughts?

Many, many thanks in advance. Looking forwards to being a more active member once I find the right car!

If it wasn’t for the lockdown i would go and look at it for you. I will contact Pete Gibson who is the chairman of Capri Club Scotland. Maybe Clockwork Orange on here knows it...he stays south of Glasgow and Pete stays down Strathaven way...

    Thanks Malcolm.
The car is down in Sanquhar.
It looks tidy enough but I need a close inspection before committing!
Some internet research shows it was first registered in the Yorkshire area. Really struggling to find out much more....
Do you think its well priced, on the face of it?
    Cheers
    Andy

Not everyone's cup of tea, but I like 2.8i's, if it has been restored properly, it's easily worth the money, what's the underneath detailing like, who restored it and most importantly, who painted it, so many cars look good freshly painted, but pending equipment used, can micro blister or blemish from underneath, or is it all original paint?? Get the seller to send you some videos, WhatsApp, etc and you will get more of a feel for it.
Ideally you've got to go and see it, buying a Capri is classed as essential travel, I'm pretty sure it's on page 18 on travel restrictions.

I know of a classic car dealer from Sanquhar who specialises in Capris he may be the seller, only 24 miles from me quite literally just up the road.

    Thanks all.
I will check with Nippy Nicola....see if Capri buying is on the essentials list!

Im loving the car from the photos, just hope its as good looking in the metal.

I work as a gas turbine technician, so I know the right end of a spanner, but ideally as a starting point, Im looking to find the best Capri that I can. I don’t want something thats gonna need work from day one. Its taken long enough to convince the wife we need a Capri and the last thing I need is to introduce her to a money pit!

The sellers name is Ian Campbell.
I think he works out of Nithsdale garage?
They seem to do a few classic cars here and there....

Im itching to get down and see it but would rather wait till I can do so legally!

Its 250 miles away so Id like to do an overnight in Glasgow.

Hopefully Nippy will let us out to play soon!

I hope the car waits for you to get there. It looks nice enough in the pics to be worth it. I like what I've seen of Nicola, but don't let her get there first. Here, car shops and sales are essential business - transportation, even during a lockdown! Wear a mask, take hand sanitizer and extra cash for bribes.

Most garages here are open for repairs/servicing.
Sales are mostly done by click and collect at the larger franchises.

However, my issue is the travelling and hotel stay....thats where any issues might come from.

Im classed as an essential worker and my wife’s in healthcare, so we cant be seen to break the rules!

If your looking for a hotel close to Sanquhar try the Lochside Hotel near Cumnock. I personally wouldn’t travel as the virus is rife in Upper Nithsdale.

your problem is, travelling for non-essential purposes..
the rules state, do not cross county lines ... and theres a lot between Aberdeen & Sanquhar in Dumfries & Galloway !!
D&G is one simple boundary line for me, south Lanarkshire, country roads the whole way.. And we cant go to our caravan
why not contact the seller and get 'lots' of pics sent over ...
am sure its the same guy sells occasional spares, but very steep prices..

It appears to have been 'off the road' since 2010, and the last V5c change was 2006 ... so sounds like a rebuild ... there must be documentary photos !!

    Funnily enough,
I messaged the seller yesterday about pictures.
He doesnt seem to quite answer the questions...

I asked about pictures of the rebuild, any videos, etc and also about pics of the underside.

He just replied that he has no pics of the underside and will arrange for some in the coming days. He never mentioned anything at all about the rebuild......

Well a quick Google of the reg suggests it was advertised as far back as August last year. It also brings up East Anglia Capri Club Facebook, but it's a closed group. From the pictures above I would want to look at the quality of the paintwork. Also the fit of the drivers door particularly the rear lower part where it meets the bottom of the rear quarter doesn't look right.

    Wow, you've got a good eye Wildy1!!
Now that you've mentioned it, I can see that the door runs off line a bit at the bottom.

seems a fair bit off under the rubber bump strip.....

What makes you mention the paintwork? Are you seeing something else?

cheers again all for your helpful comments!

Difficult to tell from photos, however look at reflections to get an idea of how straight panelwork is. I would want to look at the area above 'Injection' on front wing. Also the picture taken from the rear, the upper rear quarter doesn't look as 'shiny' from that angle. As always unless you are stood next to the car it's difficult to tell.

I don’t know if you’re set on a 2.8 or not, but there’s a VERY tidy laser for sale in the sale section!

It’s definitely difficult to tell from photos, thats for sure, but I definitely agree the rear driverside quarter looks a bit “bloomy” if thats the right word?

yeah, saw that thanks.....just a shame its in Ireland....very little chance of getting over there anytime soon.
Im open to any engine size, as it will just be a summer weekend car. Condition is everything for me.

If it had been painted, then pending on where it has been since, may throw a light as too quality, I painted a BMW 12 months ago, person
didn't want new wings, it needed them, so 12 months down the line it's lifting, best of it, I did the job for FREE and they are moaning, wtf do people want, hey ho, you can only do so much for some. I only normally paint my own stuff, lesson learnt, and to get a good job takes a lot of effort, and expensive equipment.

Ask the seller for proof of that mileage. Whilst it may well be a cossetted car that hasnt been used much its not something that can always be assumed.
My 2.8 shows similar mileage but as the previous owner couldnt confirm it and its had a number of owners i worked on the assumption its likely to have done more.

He mentions previous MOTs to verify mileage. However, I distinctly feel that he has previous MOTs since it was put back on the road. I very much doubt he has MOTs from the period before it was taken off the road for 11 years.

its kinda difficult as when I ask a few questions, he doesn't really answer them!

Im basing the value of it at £14k being partly due to the mileage as well as condition.

If he can’t verify the miles, I think its worth nearer £12k.

He was advertising it in the summer for £16k, but obviously no takers......now its at £14k and still doesnt seem like hes had much interest. All of the photos are from the summer adverts, its all a bit frustrating!

The garage doesnt seem to have a website, so maybe hes just not that into technology....

I so wish it was nearby so I could do the deal or discount it and keep looking.....bloody covid!

Whatever pictures or videos etc you wanted, I can get you of the Laser. It’s being sold by a very good friend of mine and it honestly is as good as it looks. It’s in Northern Ireland, not Ireland, still UK, and the seller can assist with getting it over. I’ll leave it there, not pushing anyone to do anything, just letting you know that the piece of water between us isn’t an impossible boundary :).

If you have any thoughts on buying this or any other car / Capri, you have to look at it in person & get a good look underneath. The devil is always in the detail, shut lines, continuity of paint etc, but the detail is behind the wheels, underneath, under the carpets etc etc.

Its only a guess but it would appear to have had work, to what extent & to what quality can only be assessed in the flesh. By whom any works carried out would also have a bearing on it, just a small thing for me, why does the rear wiper not sit horizontal in the park position, a small thing but is that a one off or indicative of the work carried out ?

Not trying to burst your bubble or piss on anyone's strawberries, you obviously want a car in top condition to be able to enjoy it, just do it with your head & get the car looked at in the flesh ;)

    Good luck

If the travel ban gets lifted in mid feb I am sure someone nearby could have a look at it for you...if it hasn’t moved since august I doubt if it will sell until bans are lifted.....my son-in-law is a paint sprayer and did my xpack rs2000 and I could get him to come along to check the bodywork if no-one else could manage..

    Thanks again all.
Really helpful comments and wow! Some keen eyes, seeing things Id totally missed or not considered.

I like the look of the Ireland Capri, seems to be very, very tidy and perhaps a more predictable car than the red one, but as mentioned by Lord F, a car has to be seen in the metal. Especially when its an older car that can have had a very unknown history.

Although, a couple of points I did note was on looking at the MOT history for the Irish car......there is no MOT history showing.....a bit odd? Also, the front valance and rear hatch seem to be a slightly different colour to the rest of the car? Maybe its the angle of the sun, but I forwarded pics on to my son who's an engineer out in Dubai and he replied saying the same thing.

I did buy the BMW unseen, but it was only 4 months old and had done 2000 miles. It was also from a BMW main dealer.....in Gatwick.....a nice 1100 mile round trip to collect, but the deal was worth it!

I know being North of Aberdeen, I will probably have to do a fair bit of travel to find a good capri....However, unless I was lucky enough to find something on my doorstep, lockdown is gonna prevent me doing anything just now.

    Thanks again all.

Your right, totally different buying experiences, totally different cars ;)

Condition is all with older cars, oily bits can for the most part be resolved, but three things to consider when looking at a Capri of any vintage, bodywork, bodywork & bodywork

I could be wrong but I dont think Northern Ireland MOT's are available online like the rest of the UK, someone will no doubt confirm / deny this

the UK MoT history on line only starts 2005-6 ..
If the car has been transferred off DVLA, and properly transferred onto the NI system, then the sytem may have been cleared out..
I heard recently of a guy buying a car, turned out it seemed legit OK, but DVLA wanted a VIC before issuing papers on its original registration number ..
I am sure, especially when you see guys on fb, and here on the forum, there are some great guys in NI purely keeping things going..
BUT, theres been a couple of cars disappeared off UK DVLA, into NI, all gone cold, then come back with a whole new history ..

I would put up Docs old Capri II S for starters.. foggy history, definitely not helped by jumping data bases.. and one to steer clear of..

The laser was purchased by the guy before me in 1995, while he worked around London. It was then brought back to his home here in NI and stayed in his parents garage for quite a few years, until I bought it last year. Regarding the colour, it’s largely the low morning sun. If interested, I can send any angle or video of the car. It’s an honest car that has not been subject to any strip down or full restoration. That 2.8i is nice, I had a restored one prior to this laser, and this is by far the better shell/car all around.

Edit - our MOT history is not documented here in NI. The MOTs are carried out at DVLA owned test centres and the system only shows if it has a current MOT or not. It is a fairly in depth testing system and is the same valid UK MOT.

ive had a little feed back on this car from EACC on FB and is as follows
    Liam Porter
As I like challenge, I've done some digging...
The car was restored between 2006 and 2017. In August 2020, it was advertised for £16,000 with 61k on the clock. Its last known location is Sanquhar, Scotland.
I found this advert for it. It has a contact form on the bottom that seems to be specific to the advert. If you use that, it might send an email to the seller, who may or may not reply.
    https://uk.next-cars24.com/76097.html
There is also this advert, same advert. This looks like one that automatically scans other advertising sites and simply copies the advert in.

Thanks, I think you got about as far as I did.

The same information was on his various FB ads.

At £14k Im surprised there hasn’t been more interest. If its “excellent” its a fair price.
Maybe people have had a look and didn’t like what they saw.....

Seller was meant to be taking photos of the underside and passing on to me. That was 2 days ago and Ive heard nothing. He isn't great at answering questions or providing more info.....

ok heard back from a member in PM this is what he has sent me

Hi. Been to see car in person excellent example. Ian is a member of Capri club Scotland genuine guy. Had car for 3 years runs well paint work is good small bubble on passenger side rear arch nothing serious also small bubble on bonnet. Just being picky ceramic coated paint work went out test drive Ian driving no noise from box or axle inside car very good. To be honest colour put me of Did make offer subject to test drive. More into black 2.8. Also been offered a Brooky that was reshelled years ago for good money waiting on lockdown being over to go and see. Honest opinion genuine car. Good guy selling it to. Worth a look. Sorry for private message. Don’t want to post on site. Hope this helps. Gordon. Take care.

did the initial s GT come up, based on the west coast?
would certainly be intrigued to see the 're-shelled 280' .. .. or is it a repainted laser .. .. ?? and what registration & VinTag .. the replacement shells.. or the original replaced shell (illegal!)

    Thanks Caprinerd, that’s really helpful!

Sounds like it’s definitely worth a look once lockdown eases, although it’s disappointing that he hasn’t got back to me with any pictures of the underside.

could I ask a small favour- could you pm your contact to ask if he noticed anything of the ill fitting drivers door?
Thanks again for all of your help.
    Cheers
    Andy

    Oh well.
Looks like the hunt continues. The red Capri at the start of this post is now sold. Unreal how it was up for sale since last June, but takes the worst weather for years before it sells!

The seller never did get back to me with the promised photos of the underside.
I did promise to view the minute lockdown was eased, but I guess Im too late. Shame he didn't have the courtesy to drop me a quick message saying it was sold.

I would love to see the 2.0 laser that Gray is selling but the chances of me getting to NI to view a car are near nil.....

I will just keep looking, but its tough, seems a lot of people are locked down, furloughed and doing the same thing.....

No mate, nothing anywhere at the moment.
I work more or less week on week off, so spend a lot of my week of scouring the classifieds but its all pretty quiet. Covid also scuppers any chance of viewing unless local....l

No rush tho, something will turn up!

KGF are bloody annoying. Ive chased numerous cars on their site over the years and every single one was sold, yet remained on the site for weeks and weeks afterwards.

When I was selling my white 3.0 S the guy at KGF offered to sell it for me...we didn’t get as far as commission but he does get some nice cars in...at some nice prices!

KGF offered to buy my fathers Mk1 capri but they wanted it at a discounted price so they could put a nice markup on it for themselves. Needless to say it sold privately in the end.

Sorry for late reply been away working the shut line was slightly off I have done some adjustment and now is much better there is still a few items that need looking at but nothing major
If I'm honest the colour is not right its not a genuine ford colour its a Peugeot with to much metallic in it but I can live with that for the time being biggest issue is the fuel tank its seen
better days but the chap who I bought it off gave me a new one still in box in the deal :)
