Hey guys, think i already posted some pics of my little capri a little while ago but thought i'd write my story in full, for any interested, a few mods done, an engine rebiuld among other things.

It all started november ish of 2006, when i bought a beautiful 2L laser in grey from leeds, thanks very much to my parents who drove me up to collect, and had an awesome drive back on the motorway. This was my first car so you can imagine how jelous my friends were (pic 1)

After only a short time of using lead additive and the engine feeling tired we decided to try a rebuild, found a unleaded head, and many new parts for as cheap as we could and started on a driveway and in a very damp, cold and unlit shed, (pic 2). needless to say with all that was against us me and my brother managed to get the engine finished in only a few weeks, and it still runs perfectly (touch wood).

i drove it for some time before hittng a dog on a small road early one morning, unfortunatly the dog died, but it was instant. the car was in a bad way so i took it off the road for a while, (pic 3) and drove a very nice little mk 1 golf i found cheap in my area as a run around. (pic 4 for any one who likes them.)

The repairs were the first body work i had done and it does show with the finish of the paint job, but with the replacment parts from evesham we did get it finished. welding was mostly done by my brother who was much more experienced than myself (that is to say he had done it before! hehe) but it was back on the road (pic 5)

we then did a track day ( the best day of our lives,) was awesome to take it and see what it could really do, needless to say i was by far the slowest car there, the place was packed with lotus elise and caterham boys. with a few back end slips and a lot of body roll i found i may need to make a few ajustments to the cars suspension.

This was the next step. after not being able to afford the insurance tax or MOT in christmas 2009 i had to take it off the road, and a few hours work later had bought myself a panhard rod and anti tramp bars, (for a escort but i did a little change or two to the brakets and they fit now!) polybushes all round, single leaf springs, and adjustable AVO dampers. (pic 6, and a few adjustments pic 7)

I had also found a nice pair of Minilite wheels, 7X13 front and 8X13 rear, which do really fill out the arches. along with extended rear leaf shackles and a bib spoiler it really does set off the look of the car. The last major problem was the exhaust, i had placed the panhard rod body mount right in the way, so that had to be changed. I decided to do away with the back box and make a small side exit from the silencer just infront of the axle, this did make a really good opertunity for me to have a go at the welding! (pic 8)

now i have just driven it back to university, a lot of fun and very happy with it for now (the rest of the pics)

More pics as we go along, as any more changes, the next should be in summer and will be a similar rebuild of the front suspension and the brakes all round. i shall be doing a few little trips up to ryhadar dams so shall post a pic or two from up there, hope all enjoy your capris this year and look forward to seeing many of you at the capri show in Evesham!

Mental! How many years ago .... another essay for you all!

some serious changes since introducing myself but managed to get back to it, battling through children and house moves and mortgage applications, managing to hold on the the Capri by the skin of my teeth ..... (it was on eBay for about a day!)

But she’s back and in a different form. I had a pretty serious crash many years ago and the old girl sat dormant for some time, then a career change and house move means it’s been well off the radar until about a year ago!

Many hours of body work, suspension cleaning and repainting, I have managed to get somewhere near an MoT on this new looking machine!

hope you are all well and managing to find some covid related time to work on and enjoy all those awesome Capris out there!

crank shaft oil seals arent that bad a job, admit its an engine out to make it easy but then theres a cleaning process could be done whilst on the stand

Ya, I went with a compression strut upgrade on the front end which used the ATB mount on the suspension arm. So to keep the anti-roll bar I needed a new mount and drop link!

the compression strut mate prob one of the best suspension upgrades! If you are into that sorta thing, it made the front end feel so sturdy!
    AE0FECD8-D363-46F8-BA9B-F34F6CD57F9C.png
rear has an anti tramp bar and panhard rod fitted too, as well as the spring and damper upgrades it feels very nice!

obviously I know the clutch cable doesn’t go there ! but this is half way through the job, new seal in, I’ve now got the gear box back on, only prop shaft and some torque-ing to do!

Thanks! I have done some nice little brake upgrades too, a bit of lathe work and bespoke mounts for mondeo front and Sierra rear calipers.

MoT this week!!! So hopefully will be out in it by the weekend! (Hopefully the weather improves!)

I've been following your exploits on YouTube and really enjoy your content, the editing is good and content engaging with a touch of your family in there to. Very relatable and entertaining.
I'll be heading for an mot in a week or two as well, fingers crossed for both of us.

    Jonny.

aha.. we ran compression struts for a while on the 'General Lee' Capri.. but upped the spring rates a bit and deleted the ARB.. now that was a real nice ride.. excellent handling, but no harshness at all..
fords trick for the RS set-up was to reverse the TCAs, fit the compression struts as you have... but then have a loop formed under the mounting point for the ARB to go through

terrible pic unfortunately, but here's the kit from Capri WST in Germany
    comp strut.JPG
far and away the best way to locate the bottom of the struts, I think there are kits available for the struts and brackets only, designed for Escort 1/2 but leaves no option for the ARB..

Interesting bit of kit Al, looking at it a simple but effective up grade

Ya, the escort strut and bracket kit is what I got off really designs. Years ago now so no idea if they still do it (assume so) but seemed a drop link was the best bet.

the compression strut tits straight up to the original TCAs, it looks a bit “awkward” but it’s all strong and fine!

as the original post says it was only fully running and on the road with these on for a month or so … but from what I can remember it was really solid upgrade! …… I let you know for sure tomorrow! I have MoT and first drive!!!

    only a little bit excited!

honestly, It was touch and go! Obviously classic Ford is a way of life … but, when family needs sometimes drastic measures are needed!

it was with a heavy heart it was listed and I think the fact it was so close makes me all the more determined to keep it now!

I hope I didn’t spoil your cuppa tea tho @2.8jonny

    Tea was cold anyway ;)

I totally understand the situation completely, marriage, kids, mortgage and shear frustration at times have almost spelled the end of mine several times. I even sold most of my spares to fund house repairs and now deeply regret that.
My car was off the road for about 9 years or so and I've only been using it the last two summers, obviously cost has kept millage down to less than I'd like but what a feeling taking the kids and wife out in the capri! Clearly the twin 11 year old in the back seat would rather be seen covered in shit than in a capri but the Mrs loves it almost as much as the day I proposed to her in it.
My mot is booked in 7 days and I'm gonna be like a nervous father to be again .

I hope the mot doesn't reduce YouTube content too much.

    Enjoy wearing those tyres.

    Jonny

@2.8johnny that’s exactly it! Life stresses and classic fords don’t always go hand in hand!

good luck the the MOT! What’s your nervous rating?? I had 570!

    @SIDEWAYS 3.0 GHIA always plans

move done all the paint my self and it’s not ideal so some touch ups, also the back bumper is really shoddy so I want to do some more work to that. Then there are loads of bits that got damaged in the crash years ago, or I have just misplaced so I am going to trying to source some of those over the coming months.

then long term plans are for a new engine, can’t decide what yet! but thats for prob winter 2022 once I’ve enjoyed it for a few summers

plenty more YouTubing, I’m enjoying that as much as the car itself, well almost!

Some pics of a recent drive I took! A local
Show was cancelled due to rain but thought I’d go out anyway. Few nice fords came out with me which was ace!! The second picture shows the new abs improved back bumper! So much smaller and “slicked” thinking I need to get them chromed somehow tho! Spray paint just doesn’t look good!
