    Hi Everyone.

I was a member of the forum about 5/6 years ago. I have been away messing with BMWs and Clios for a few years but I am now looking at getting another Capri.

I have been to look at this car tonight and just wanted people’s opinion on weather it is worth what he is asking?

Shell in mint barring a bit of micro blistering on the paint and the brooklands interior is in excellent condition as well.

    Item number on ebay. 154429405643

    hi Chris & welcome..
    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/154429405643
looks like a Laser with bits added.. its not an original 2.8 or 3ltr shell I'm sure - missing reinforcements ..
that engine has been screwed up a bit.. welded over fuel pump mounting
and the water pump is ruined, some div has cut a chunk out the pulley to get to the mounting bolts..
PCV hose appears to be going 'nowhere' ?
those solid aluminium top mounts will have your teeth shattered in no time, no compliance for road irregularities, may even end causing structural damage ..

where is the battery mounted, looks like the tray is removed?

certainly looks tidy enough, but I would want to see a reg, or docs first..
    upload_2021-10-27_21-54-56.png
the registration on it - D717PWG - is not registered on DVLA - the picture is included further down the advert, not in the main batch ..
    upload_2021-10-27_21-56-46.png

so I would want to see that clarified !!

And with DVLA checking a lot just now I would want to see the correct engine size on the V5

    Hi.

Yes the dvla search had me concerned a bit.

Not familiar with the Essex engine but I did question the welded patch?

Its a laser shell for sure. Drivers side wing is a pattern part as well.

I agree with the top mounts! It’s got coil overs as well. My last Capri had this setup and was fully polybushed as well. It was way too hard for normal roads.

It’s a nice car with a lot of expensive bits but I think he is just asking way too much for it.

    I think it’s probably worth 12/13k tops.

Think I will leave it as I am really wanting an x pack anyway

Bitsa, unfinished lash up not running & driving, walk away & don't look back IMHO .....

Way more honest complete cars out there at less money

Hi everyone after looking at a fair few capris since I last looked at this car I am seriously thinking about buying it.

prices seem to be mental at the moment and as I am going to modify it anyway I am not bothered about a standard car.

It’s over my budget but I was thinking I could sell
Some of the parts to recoup some of my initial outlay.

What do you think the Essex engine and triple
Carbs and full stainless manifolds and exhaust would be worth?

    And is there still a
    Market for this engine?

Also what would the Brooklands interior be worth. It’s near mint to be fair.

Need to make a decision tonight to be fair so all comments welcome

For one, l hope you are not paying 16k for it, the engine is an unknown entity, unless you can pull the sump and the heads, if it was a good set up, l would pay a decent price for the engine, I personally love Essex V6's, that interior is nice, worth a fair bit, l paid a lot of money for my 2.8iS, but it's never been welded, what you are looking at buying is basically a good rolling shell, the market goes pretty quite at this time of the year, so it's a case of bide your time, or the one you are on about is going for a bargain price?

    He wants 15k for it.

He reckons it’s worth 20k done which I doubt he will get.

I reckon the interior is worth 2k maybe and the engine maybe the same? It been worked on ric wood apparently.

I have seen the carb manifolds and carbs selling for over 2/3k new obviously

My reasoning was behind paying that for it is the shell is mint. It will cost it 15k to buy a ropey 2.8i and get it to this standard probably more.

Yes he is a trader I have been to see the car. I have offered him what I think is a fair price for the car but he is sticking to wanting 15k for it.

He said he is putting the engine back in now and finishing it all off and will get 20k for it…..

I will be surprised if he gets that but he has a lot of nice expensive old fords at his garage so obviously know ls something I don’t!

Either way he hasn’t accepted my offer so back to the drawing board

I know profit is needed for any company, but sometimes greed gets in the way, be very interesting to find out what they paid for it, it looks to be a very good base to build a car from, but if you want a X pack, it was probably too good to start cutting arches etc.
One will turn up when you least expect it.

    Yes you are right.

Probably too good to start chopping up but having resorted several capris in the past I know how much the bodywork can cost.

So ideally I want as good as shell as possible to start with.

I have seen another car on eBay which looks quite good.

The right car will sell itself to you. Others can come close, but you'll spot the difference when it's in front of you.

only one absolute criteria when buying a Capri - a decent solid shell with a full set of papers .. thats it
everything else bolts in or on ..
everything else you can deal with on your own with a halfords tool kit ..

Buy any Capri with a poor or messed about shell and it will cost you dear ..

Case in point - I bought my Laser in 2001 from the chap I helped build it (my Brother!) - I ran the car for over 10 years then decided to refurb it ..
we all looked after it to the best of our abilities, we even put a whole load of heart and soul into the original build ..
that car has now been off the road over 10 years, I rebuilt the shell in 2011 - we used a lot of new panels and quite a few 6x4 sheets of new metal ..
But how much cash has gone out the door ????

what price you want to spend on an unknown necessity to rebuild ??
my point - don't spend a lot on something you just know you're going to spend big on to fix ..
